India’s Wheat sowing up 4.28% at 202.54 lakh hectares so far

Wheat sowing has picked up in the ongoing rabi season as the crop was planted in 4.28% or 8.34 lakh hectare more area at 202.54 lakh hectare (ha) compared to the year-ago period, said a latest data released by the Agriculture Ministry.

Wheat is the main rabi crop, the sowing of which begins from October and harvesting from April onwards. Wheat was sown in 194.21 lakh hectare a year ago.

A significant increase in wheat planting reported from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan this week has helped overall rabi sowing to surpass the area covered during the corresponding week last year.

As against 413 lakh hectares sown in the same week in the previous year, farmers across the country covered 418 lakh hectare, an increase of 1.24% year-on-year.

While Madhya Pradesh planted wheat on 47.7 lakh hectare, nearly 16% more than 41 lakh hectare in the same week in 2018-19, Rajasthan reported it has nearly 25 lakh hectare under wheat cultivation as compared to 21 lakh hectare year-on-year. At 30.85 lakh hectare , Punjab has nearly 2.5 lakh hectare less under wheat as compared to the same week last year.

The sowing of gram and masoor continues to lag behind, pushing the total pulses area down by 6% year-on-year.

While the area under gram this week was 71.77 lakh hectare , about 6.23% lower than 76.54 lakh hectare in the the corresponding week in 2018-19. At 12.12 lakh hectare , masoor acreage is 10% lower than that in the same week last year.
