The growing trend in Maize prices has introduced cheers to the farmers, but has made the eating industries together with the poultry quarter and starch makers anxious, triggering demand for responsibility-free imports of corn.

The infestation of the scary pest Fall Army Worm (FAW) (Spodoptera frugiperda), coupled with susceptible monsoon rains witnessed in key generating States consisting of Karnataka and Telangana have shriveled the Maize output and improved the price.

Maize costs, which hovered round Rs 1,100-1,200 a quintal at the beginning of October at the moment are ruling between Rs 1,seven-hundred-1,800 degrees throughout several markets in Karnataka. In reality, the modal Maize expenses in a few markets had crossed Rs 1,900.

The Centre had fixed an MSP of Rs 1,700 in line with quintal for Maize for the kharif 2018-19 season.

The Agriculture Ministry, which had pegged the kharif Maize manufacturing at 21.47 million tonnes (mt) in its first increase estimates, higher than the previous year’s 20.24 mt , is yet to quantify the crop losses arising out of the FAW infestation and drought conditions.
